A LITTLE ABOUT US...

Public Espresso + Coffee is a small-batch coffee roastery, espresso shop and pour-over bar located in Buffalo, New York, founded by James Rayburg and Sam Scarcello. We are nerds dedicated to the science and art of coffee and espresso. We founded public espresso + coffee out of a desire to provide a different style of cafe experience in Buffalo after traveling and experiencing unique types of service in other cities around the world. An infectious resurgence in the local food and drink scene inspired us to setup at a local farmers market serving pour-overs of our fresh roasted coffee back in November 2013.

After 15 months of working the market and special event circuit, our first brick and mortar location opened in the Hotel at the Lafayette in March 2015.  In our first few month's of operation, we were awarded Buffalo's Best Coffee (2015) by Artvoice and Best New Hotspot (2015) by Buffalo Spree Magazine. In 2017, we expanded our operation to include a full kitchen offering breakfast, lunch and bakery programs. Our second location is now open in South Buffalo. There are new opportunities on the horizon all the time.

James Rayburg - Head Roaster

James keeps the train on the tracks.

He directs our coffee program and manages the roastery and cafe teams on a daily basis.

This is his baby and was inspired by cafe experiences in cities like Shanghai and Toronto while traveling for his previous profession as an architect.​

Sam Scarcello - head baker

Sam runs our bakery program and handles our branding
and social media channels.

He guides our cafe, kitchen, bakery and roastery teams to maintain a cohesive vision across all of our programs and then turns around to share that with our audiences.

Our Team

We pride ourselves on fostering a community of creativity, inclusion and opportunity. We build teams and create positions around people, rather than the other way around and love letting individual talents shine. We are constantly learning, but we believe in holistic training and investing time and sweat equity in bettering ourselves and each other.
